Porters Field, Dudley

PJA was appointed by developer Avenbury to provide design support on all highway and transport issues for this retail development.

Dudley town centre has suffered significant decline in recent years, due in part to competition from larger centres, and there is now a substantial amount of underused and vacant commercial property.

Dudley MBC has put in place strong development and urban design strategies to begin to turn around the town's fortunes, which include a requirement for a new large foodstore.

Central to the concept of the scheme is the closure of Trindle Road, an unnecessarily large dual carriageway that has been relieved of heavy traffic.  The scheme involves constructing a new, more appropriate scale road to the east of the retail development, enabling the creation of a traffic-free square between the new stores and the existing Churchill Precinct.

This square is directly adjacent to the town's bus station and will in due course be the site of a Midland Metro stop, thus providing excellent access by public transport.
