International Cycle Benchmarking

TfL commissioned PJA and Urban Movement to carry out a study of 14 comparator cities which had achieved high levels of cycling and/or recent significant growth, to inform the preparation of the updated London standards.

The cities studied were (in order of increasing cycling mode share):

  • New York
  • Washington
  • Minneapolis
  • Brighton
  • Christchurch (New Zealand)
  • Dublin
  • Nantes
  • Seville
  • Stockholm
  • Munich
  • Berlin
  • Cambridge
  • Malmo/Lund
  • Utrecht

The report identifies successful measures that can easily be applied in the UK, but are seldom done so at present; and measures that will require some change in regulations to enable them to be used.

It also identifies poor provision that is commonly used in the UK but is entirely absent in the comparator cities. The final report can be downloaded here.
