CABE Space Enabling

Phil Jones of PJA was appointed as a CABE Space Enabler in 2006, and provided input on a number of projects up until March 2011.

Much of the work involved training on masterplanning and street design. This included a series of events around the country following the launch of Manual for Streets in 2007, expounding the principles of the document and setting them within the need for the better design of towns and cities.

During 2010 and 2011, Phil took part in a further round of training, directed at local authorities in rural areas as part of the DEFRA-funded Rural Masterplan Fund initiative. The training was delivered with other CABE Enablers specialising in architecture and landscape architecture, and also included reference to Building for Life principles.

Projects carried out under the commission included working with local authorities and other stakeholders in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire and Cockermouth, Cumbria on enhancements to the towns' high streets. Phil's main role was to build a consensus on the design principles
amongst the various parties.

In Marple, Stockport, Phil worked with members of the local Civic Society on a decluttering audit of the town centre, presenting the findings to senior members and officers of the Council. In time it is hoped that this will result in more sensitive design policies across the Borough.
